Conflict Resolution - My way or your way or the highway or noway?

My way or your way or the highway or no-way?

What causes workplace conflict?
Conflict in the office / workplace could be triggered due to:

  • Poor Communication
  • Poor work environment
  • Poor management
  • Lack of equal opportunities
  • Unfair treatment
  • Unclear job roles
  • Inadequate training
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Significant changes to products, Organisational charts, partial / biased appraisals or pay systems.

Major causes of workplace conflict
Other major reasons of conflict in the workplace include:

Personality clashes (+/- team members) - the 'personality mix' within a team can create a psychological imbalance when a new member of staff joins or if two colleagues suddenly quit or is being shuffled.
Individuals may also respond to difficult or challenging situations in an unhelpful or unproductive way.

Expectations (Unrealistic) - conflict at work can often result when employers ignore the needs of employees or set unrealistic expectations. For example, arranging hours that make it difficult for employees to commute to workplace.

Business values - most people have very clear ideas about what they think is fair, and your organisation's procedures and policies must reflect this. For example, giving someone a fair hearing or explaining the reasoning behind a decision.

Workplace challenges (Unresolved)- for example, an employee might request to be transferred to another team or location because of their manager's 'abusive or aggressive' leadership style. However, the employee may have cooked up other reasons - for example, they may blame their manager for being partial or biased or a lack of training or career progression.

Nagging - Work force are often disturbed by rumours and office politics. Many have become victims of power politics.

Workload Exploitation - sometimes workplace conflict is caused because people feel they are being pushed too hard and resentment sets in if they feel their workload is unmanageable.
